The grubs were there the whole time, they just weren't being looked for. When grub larvae are feeding actively in July and August, the first thing you feel before you see anything is a subtle sponginess underfoot. That sensation comes from root mass loss, the grubs are consuming the root system from below, so the soil-turf interface loses its structural integrity. Most people assume they over-watered or that thatch has built up.

The tell is that the sponginess is patchy, not uniform across the lawn. Thatch problems feel consistent everywhere; grub damage clusters in irregular zones that correspond to where adult beetles laid eggs six to eight weeks earlier. I always ask homeowners to walk a grid pattern and note where the spongy areas start and stop. The boundaries are usually sharper than any irrigation or drainage issue would produce.

Wildlife Digging: A Behavioral Symptom You Can't Ignore

Overnight digging from skunks, raccoons, or birds, especially starlings probing in tight rows, is a secondary sign that often appears before the turf visibly dies. These animals are extraordinarily efficient at locating grub concentrations; a skunk can smell larvae through 4 inches of soil. I've seen lawns where the wildlife digging was the first diagnostic clue three to four weeks before any surface browning developed.

This sign is strongly suggestive but not diagnostic on its own, because the same animals hunt earthworms and other soil invertebrates. You still need to perform the soil pull and count before treating. But if you're seeing repeated nocturnal digging in the same zones, move those areas to the top of your inspection list.

Not all white grubs follow the same calendar. Japanese beetle larvae (Popillia japonica), masked chafer larvae (Cyclocephala spp.), and European chafer larvae (Rhizotrogus majalis) are the three most common species in U.S. lawns, and their egg-laying windows differ by two to three weeks. The simplest field identification uses the raster pattern, the arrangement of spines on the underside of the last abdominal segment. Timing the Treatment Window: Preventive vs. Curative

This is where most homeowners lose money. Preventive treatments, imidacloprid, clothianidin, or chlorantraniliprole, are applied between May 1 and July 15, before eggs hatch, targeting newly emerged first-instar larvae that are small, shallow, and highly susceptible. According to Extension Entomology, chlorantraniliprole applied 60 to 90 days before peak egg hatch consistently shows the highest efficacy rates of any currently registered grub product, often exceeding 90% larval mortality.

If you missed that window and are confirming active grubs in August or September, you need a curative product, trichlorfon or zeta-cypermethrin, and you need to irrigate immediately after application with at least 0.5 inches of water to move the active ingredient into the root zone. Curative treatments work only when grubs are still within 2 inches of the surface and soil temperature remains above 60°F. Once nighttime soil temperatures drop below that threshold consistently, treat the damage as final and plan for overseeding in the appropriate seasonal window.

What to Do With the Damaged Turf After Treatment

Confirming and treating the infestation is step one. The bare or thinned areas left behind still need to be addressed, or you'll be fighting weed pressure in those zones for the next two seasons. In cool-season turf, late August through mid-September is the best overseeding window, soil temperature is still above 50°F and there's typically enough moisture for germination before first frost. In warm-season turf, recovery often has to wait until spring once soil temperatures at a 2-inch depth exceed 65°F consistently.

Rake out any dead material, loosen the top inch of soil with a hard rake, and apply seed at the appropriate rate for your grass species.
