Most homeowners waste an entire season treating the wrong problem. The brown patches appearing in July and August look like drought stress, feel like drought stress, and respond to nothing, because they are not drought stress at all. They are grub damage, and the difference is not visible until you get your hands on the turf.
Grub damage is defined by root loss, not leaf discoloration. White grubs, primarily the larvae of Japanese beetles, masked chafers, and May or June beetles, feed on turfgrass roots at 2 to 4 inches below the soil surface from midsummer through early fall. By the time the surface browns, the root system may already be 80 percent destroyed.
Grab a chunk of the damaged turf and pull. If the sod lifts cleanly with no resistance, like pulling back a loose piece of carpet, grubs are the cause. Drought-stressed or disease-affected turf holds because the roots, however weakened, are still attached. This single test saves homeowners from weeks of misapplied irrigation and fungicide treatments.
TIP: Do the tug test in at least 3 separate spots within the damaged area. Grub populations are rarely uniform, and a mixed diagnosis, part grub damage, part drought, is possible and changes your repair strategy.
Not every lawn with grubs needs treatment. According to Penn State Extension, the economic damage threshold for most cool-season turfgrasses is 5 to 8 grubs per square foot. Below that number, a healthy, well-irrigated lawn can outpace the feeding pressure and recover without intervention.
To count accurately, cut and fold back a 1-square-foot section of sod to a 3 to 4 inch depth and count every C-shaped larva you find. Do this in three or four locations across the damaged zone and average the counts. Sandy soil or turf already under drought stress can sustain visible damage at as few as 3 grubs per square foot, so adjust your threshold down if your soil profile is poor.
This is where I see the most expensive mistakes. Preventive and curative grub products target completely different life stages and have almost no overlap in effectiveness. The grub life cycle dictates your entire treatment calendar, and getting it wrong by even 3 to 4 weeks costs you a full season.
Japanese beetle eggs are laid in July, hatching into first-instar grubs by late July to early August. These small, freshly hatched grubs are shallow, actively feeding, and highly vulnerable. By September, they have molted into large third-instar grubs that are increasingly resistant to pesticide penetration and have begun moving deeper into the soil profile. UC ANR Integrated Pest Management confirms that curative applications are most effective during this narrow first and early second instar window.
Preventive products containing imidacloprid or chlorantraniliprole should go down in late May through early July, before eggs hatch. Chlorantraniliprole, marketed as Acelepryn, has a notably longer application window and lower toxicity profile. University of Minnesota Turfgrass Science notes that chlorantraniliprole applied in early May provides consistent control through August because of its soil persistence.
WARNING: Applying a preventive product (imidacloprid, chlorantraniliprole) to an already-damaged lawn in August will not kill the large third-instar grubs currently destroying your roots. You need a curative product containing trichlorfon or carbaryl for late-season rescue treatment. Using the wrong chemistry wastes money and delays recovery by weeks.
Preventives: Imidacloprid (Merit) and chlorantraniliprole (Acelepryn) are the two dominant options. Imidacloprid is effective but must be applied before egg hatch and watered in promptly. Chlorantraniliprole has a broader application window, lower bee toxicity, and stronger residual activity. Both require 0.5 inches of irrigation within 24 hours of application to move the active ingredient into the root zone where eggs and newly hatched grubs reside.
Curatives: Trichlorfon (Dylox) is the fastest-acting option for late-summer rescue, with results visible in 7 to 14 days. Carbaryl is a second option but slower. Neither should be applied once soil temperatures drop below 60°F at a 2-inch depth because grubs migrate below the treatment zone. Check soil temperature, not air temperature, before applying either.
If you are seeing cone-shaped holes or divots across your lawn at night, skunks, raccoons, and birds are digging for grubs below the surface. This secondary damage often appears before the turf even browns, making it one of the earliest diagnostic indicators of a grub infestation. In my experience, a lawn being systematically excavated by wildlife in July almost always yields a grub count above the damage threshold. Let the animals tell you there is a problem before you even pull the spade.
Once you have controlled the grubs, do not assume the lawn will heal on its own. Mild damage under 5 grubs per square foot on healthy soil can recover with consistent irrigation and a fall fertilization program. Severe damage, anything that required the turf to be physically removed and reinstalled, needs active overseeding or sod repair.
Time repair seeding for soil temperatures between 50 and 65°F, typically late August through October across most of the country. Rake out dead thatch to mineral soil, overseed at 3 to 5 lbs per 1,000 sq ft for tall fescue or 1 to 2 lbs for Kentucky bluegrass, and keep the seedbed consistently moist for the first 14 days. Leaving bare patches untreated invites weed colonization within 3 to 4 weeks; the biology does not wait for a convenient repair window.
TIP: Apply a starter fertilizer at 1 lb of phosphorus per 1,000 sq ft when overseeding damaged areas. Phosphorus supports root development in new seedlings and directly counteracts the root zone disruption grubs caused. Do not use a high-nitrogen product at this stage; it pushes shoot growth at the expense of the roots you are trying to rebuild.
Grub damage is one of the most correctable lawn problems I diagnose, but only when homeowners catch it in the right window and use the right chemistry. Confirm the threshold, match the product to the life stage, water it in, and repair the damage before weeds move in.
